The Growing Field invites you to participate in a fall book drive benefiting families and children affected by hurricane Katrina.  This invitation welcomes all schools to participate and also seeks business and corporate sponsorship to make this continued effort possible.

This project began as a small project this school year to help replace books throughout the Gulf region.  One elementary class in Ft. Collins, Colorado was given the opportunity to write words of hope and inspiration inside the book Your Song for a donation to school children in New Orleans.  The goal is to reach the children of Louisiana and let them know others throughout our country are thinking about them.  This opportunity also allows a pen pal opportunity for any child interested in staying in touch with their peer in the Gulf.

As one class told another, and told another, this book drive has now turned into a project much larger in scale.  To date close to one thousand brand new Growing Field books have been inscribed by community youth and will be donated to children throughout the Gulf in July.

In a recent development a number of publishing houses are now offering to compile the letters from our children (as well as the reply letters from Gulf students) for publication- a chance for the youth in our country to be heard.  When sold, 100% of all proceeds will go to hurricane relief and education efforts.
