The Inspiration
On the morning of September 11, 2001, my life changed when my friend, peer and mentor Captain Jason Dahl died at the hands of the hijackers while flying as Captain on United Flight 93.
A pilot for United Airlines myself, I was fortunate to have been influenced by Jason. He taught me about leadership, personal excellence, personal contribution and the importance for all of us to leave our legacy.
At Jason's memorial service, I listened to his thirteen year old son, Matthew, eulogize his father. "My father never...ever...missed a chance to read with me," he said. "Every night he was home we would lay in bed together, read, talk, and share stories. I have brought along our favorite book today and, with your permission, would like to read it, just one more time, for him." Matthew read Dr. Seuss's "Goodnight Book" cover to cover. When he finished, he closed the book, looked out at all of us and said, "Goodnight, Dad."
Jason's living example, and the legacy he left behind in his son, is the inspiration behind this book series. The Growing Field was written in honor of my friend Jason Dahl and is named after his crash site in Pennsylvania.
